bookcase redo

Over the weekend my daughter and I worked on making over the bookcase in her bedroom.

Before

After

We started by emptying out the entire bookcase (it needed a good cleaning anyway), and then removing all the shelves. I used zebra print wrapping paper I found at Michael's and some double sided tape to jazz up the back of her bookcase!
She loves anything and everything with zebra print so this was perfect for her room.

If you want to see more of her room I posted about it here.

Questions and answers

Over the weekend I received several questions about my family room and the family sign I made. I thought I would take a few minutes this morning to answer those questions for you.

Where did I buy my striped curtains?

For the life of me I couldn't find striped curtains anywhere so I made mine. I used white curtain panels and painted on the stripes with black paint. Go here to see the full tutorial.

Did I make the handprint art?

Yes, this was a super fast and easy project. You can find out more about it here.

How did I make my family sign?

I have a full tutorial for making my wood signs here.

What color paint did I use in my family room?

The color is barnwood a Valspar signature paint. It's a paint and primer in one and it's a matte finish.

Any tips for painting trim?

Take your time with the prep work. Lightly sand trim and then clean it off really well. Make sure to tape off everything you don't want painted. I used a paint and primer in one and just used light coats of paint. It does take a lot of work so just blast the radio and get busy! Be prepared for an aching hand because it takes about four coats of paint. To see how I painted my trim go here.

Hope this answers some of your questions. If I missed something just ask. You can also post questions to me through Facebook (I usually check several times a day).

Also don't forget the linky party this Wednesday!!! If you would like me to send you a reminder email just comment me your address.

Have a great Monday!

Painting away

Last month I began my long journey of painting all our home's trim. It all started when I decided to join the Imagine the Impossibilities challenge and makeover our entry way.

If you missed that makeover you can find it here.

Last weekend I tackled all the ugly brown trim in our family room.

Yesterday I spent the ENTIRE afternoon painting just some of the trim in our kitchen.

There is still more trim to paint in the kitchen not to mention the rest of the house.

So I might finish the kitchen today, but I'm leaning more towards just being lazy. There's always tomorrow, right?

Please please please remember to spread the word about my first EVER linky party next Wednesday!

You could also be super sweet and like me on Facebook!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Orange

Why did the orange stop rolling down the hill?

It ran out of juice!

Okay, I know corny. I couldn't help myself. Orange is my favorite color right now when it comes to accent colors. If you didn't read my becha didn't know post check it out.

I love how orange looks with black and white and with browns and earth colors. Here are some oranges that caught my eye.

All photos from better homes and gardens

What do you think? Love it or live without it?

I am loving it!

Please remember to spread the word about my very first linky party happening next Wednesday! Also like my facebook page to keep updated on what's going on here!

Family room update

Our family room has been and will be for awhile a work in progress. If you've read any of my earlier posts about our family room you will remember it started out looking like this.

Then this...

And today this...

As you can see this room has been through a lot of changes in the nine months we've lived here. The most recent change came about this weekend when I painted all the brown trim white! I hate painting trim it really is no fun at all. But four coats of paint later and the room looks so much brighter!

I still have my to do list for this room and can finally check one more thing off.

  • hang flat screen over fireplace
  • paint fireplace mantel
  • paint room
  • hang curtains
  • new furniture
  • get rug
  • hang family photos
  • new flooring (eventually)
  • paint brown trim white
  • what to do with those awkward shaped windows

Not too bad, huh
I only have a few more items to check off!

Before I sign off I want to announce that I am holding my very first linky party next Wednesday! I hope you will all come by and support me by linking up. Please let others know as well. My worst fear is to host a party with no guests!

Thanks for your time today!

DIY wood family sign

Last week I was thrilled to have made my first wood sign! I love how my "open daily" sign looks in our kitchen. But you had to have known that once I started I wouldn't be able to stop!

I mentioned yesterday that over the weekend my husband helped me cut some more MDF for projects. Well here is my next project... a family sign for our home! Yah! I love it!

It looks perfect hanging over our family room picture gallery.

These signs are so easy to make (I wish I had known this earlier). I made this sign the same way I made my sign last week. If you missed that post you can find it here along with step by step instructions.

                    Have a great day!

A little of this and that

Where did the weekend go? I can't believe it is already Monday. It doesn't feel like I really accomplished much over the weekend, but when I break it down I did get some little things done.

  • We had some beautiful weather on Saturday so we spent some much needed time outdoors. Also got my dirty van washed!
  • With the help of my awesome husband I cut a piece of MDF into smaller pieces for future projects.
  • Painted some more of my brown trim ( a four coater project)!!! You'll have to wait and see what room.
  • Made another Pinterest recipe which turned out yummy. You'll have to try this white chicken enchilada recipe.
  • Started another wood sign project
  • had family over and spent too many hours making a fool of myself playing Wii Just Dance!
  • Finally finally got my buttons for this blog set up! I tried and tried to figure out those dang grab boxes with no luck. Had to go to my husband a computer whiz to help me out. He got me all fixed up within an hour!

So now I'm stuck with piles and piles of dirty laundry. A sink full of dirty dishes. Paint cans and paint brushes here and there. Rooms covered in lovely dog hair that need vacuumed. A scrapbook desk with stacks of pictures that need to be organized and scrapbooked. In other words... LIFE!

I also want to give a BIG THANK YOU  to Leanne from organize and decorate everything for featuring my DIY underbed storage boxes!

I am also hoping to have my FIRST EVER link party a week from Wednesday! I am so excited! I hope you will help me spread the word!

My husband just returned from an out of state work trip and the kids are off school today(conference exchange day, love those)! We are going to grab some lunch and a movie. I'm looking forward to spending some quality time together.

I'll be back tomorrow, hope you'll stop by again!

Pinterest number round-up

I don't know about you, but I've been loving all of the numbers used in decorating recently. I find myself gravitating towards them whenever I'm pinning away on Pinterest.

I decided to do a Pinterest round-up of all of my favorites.

Hope you are feeling inspired as well. So many clever ideas! I've tried to link back all the photos to the original source not just the pin.

Have a great day!

Wood sign tutorial

Hope you all had a wonderful Valentines Day! With my husband out of town for work the kids and I just hung out and ate way too many sweets!

I also found time yesterday to make something I've been wanting to do for awhile, a wood sign for our kitchen. I've been pinning signs on Pinterest and stalking them on Etsy. I finally decided to just go for it!

I started by giving my board a light coat of white paint. I just used simple craft paint for this project. The white will be the color of my lettering.

I used my Cricut machine to cut out my vinyl letters. They make vinyl specifically for the Cricut machine.  Normally $9.99 at Michael's I used my 50% off coupon to get it for half.
I arranged my letters where I wanted them on the board, then peeled off the backing and adhered them to the board.

Then I painted over top of the letters with the black paint.  Thanks to my youngest for helping out with the photography!

I let the paint dry and then carefully peeled the vinyl letters off. This part was soooo much fun! My girls just stood there watching they were so impressed!

That's it! I was surprised at how smoothly the project went. I kept  waiting for something to go wrong.

Now I just have to get some picture hangers to attach to the back so I can actually hang it on the wall. Right now it's just propped on top of my kitchen cabinets, but I'm really enjoying it there.

Now that I've conquered this sign my head is spinning with more ideas!

Have a wonderful Wednesday!
