Black painted interior doors

Last week I shared how our kitchen remodel was coming along and our completed pantry. I loved the look of our newly painted pantry door so much that I decided to paint the rest of our main floor doors as well.

Here are some before and after shots.
The view from our kitchen down the main hallway.

The door to our half bath.

Entryway coat closet.

I removed the doors and all the hardware before painting. I used a semi gloss interior paint on the doors {Glidden-onyx black}. I spray painted all of the brass hinges and even the door knobs with Rustoleum Universal Metallic paint and primer in one {satin nickel finish}.

To make the painting process easier my husband fastened the  hinges and doorknobs onto pieces of wood.

To keep the doors off the floor so I could paint both sides my husband screwed pieces of wood to both ends of the door.  This way when one side was still drying we could flip the door over and paint the other side.

It took three coats of paint, but it was worth all the work. We love the look of the black doors! Plus the black hides all those dirty little handprints!

In the meantime I am still patiently waiting for our new countertops to be delievered. I'll keep you updated on our kitchen progress!

  1. That looks great! I've been wanting to do this. Maybe a dark grey. This is the only thing Hubs and I have disagreed on in the house. :/

  2. This looks ahmaaaazing! I love it. This makes me want to run and buy the paint tonight and start. Wonderful. The before and after shots really show the impact of the black door. It changes everything! Did you paint both sides? Probably, right? I have heard that painted door knobs chip and the paint comes off. Maybe you had a trick? I love it!

  7. I really like the contrary of the black with the wall color and white trim. White is such a bad idea in my opinion.

    1. The doors have held up really well! No scratches at all even with a small dog who sometimes scratches on our basement door when he wants up or down. Dust hasn't been an issue either, I've only wiped them down once since painting. All in all I am still thrilled with them! Thanks for coming by!

  40. I think giving a room a new color of paint makes it look a lot nicer. I've acquired an interior paint supply in Oregon because I paint my house all the time, at least it seems that way.

  41. Hello, I just wondered how the handles and hinges are holding up? I have the ugly gold handles and painting them would be a huge cost saver till we could afford to replace them. Your doors look great, and I love the hints about painting the handles and the board you screwed to the doors to keep them off the ground.
    Thanks,
    Hilary

  42. Hello! The doors look great. I had seen a post where a woman painted all her interior doors black before, but forgot about it until now. I love it and am thinking maybe, just maybe I can convince my fiance.... Just a quick tip, if anyone is looking to do this look as well, using a tinted primer will really help in reducing the amount of coats needed to cover the white door. Love your blog!!
