Extension farmhouse table

I know I promised I would show you pics of our new farmhouse table in all of it's extended glory weeks ago, but it just seems like life is getting busier and busier. Since I blog strictly for a hobby my posts have become far and few between. I have good intentions of blogging more often, it's just finding the time when I'm in the "blogging zone". You know what I mean. 

So now on to our farmhouse table which you already saw in our newly decorated dining room. Today I want to share some photos of the building process and what the table and benches look like when extended.

Before building our table my husband and I looked at many tables and plans on Pinterest. We settled on a table that we saw in a local furniture store ad (here). The store table was over $1,300, we built our table and two benches for around $200! I do not have plans for how we built our table but there are tons of plans for similar tables available online.

My husband built our table in our unheated garage in the middle of winter. Try not to pay much attention to the messy garage. 

So here are some pics of the building process.

I love the color of the weathered gray stain I used.

This is the table when not extended it is 7 feet long.

Both ends slide out and the extra pieces are stored underneath.

The two extra table leaves are secured in the middle. The benches pull apart as well and a wood extension piece is added to each end. 

The table is 9.5 feet long when fully extended.

In reality we will only use the table extended a few times a year for holidays and birthdays, but it's nice to have the option and extra seating available if needed.

Dining Room with farmhouse table

Last week I showed you the progress I had made in our dining room. Since then my husband and I have been busy putting the room back together. I recently sold our old table and chairs on Craigslist and my husband completed the farmhouse table and benches he has been working on. We also added some shelving and new decor to the room.

My husband (who keeps amazing me with new skills) made the farmhouse table and benches for the room which saved us a pretty penny. All in we spent less than $200 for the table and two benches. I used Min-wax Classic Gray stain and a clear matte polyurethane. The table and benches are actually expandable, I will share more on that later this week.

We already had the wood for the shelving in our garage. I stained it to match the table and found some inexpensive brackets at Menards. 

Our dining room is small roughly 10x13 and attached to my craft room and the kitchen. 

I made the GATHER sign with leftover wood that I distressed with paint and stain. The awesome letters are all from Michael's, I attached them to the wood with Liquid Nails and JB Weld (that stuff is super strong).

I'm so happy with the room and excited to complete the rest of the projects!

Dining room progress

Hello! 

Today I wanted to pop in and share some pics of my "in progress" dining room. 

Since we replaced our floors last winter I've been itching to update and redecorate the room. Here's what our dining room previously looked like.

and currently it looks like this

The new floors make a huge difference and last week I repainted the room. I used the same color as my adjoining craft room, smooth stone by Glidden. I also took the shades off the lights on the chandelier. 

We are replacing the current table with a wood farmhouse table that my husband is building. I also have plans to add some shelving and possibly some board and batten.

Dining room reveal

As you know I've been working on primping my dining room over the summer.

I've been busy painting walls, trim, chairs and a dresser for the room. Still a couple things that I want to change in the future like the blinds and carpet, but those just aren't in the budget right now.

Then we moved in and it looked like this.

I just wasn't "in love" with it and decided it needed a few changes.

Have a seat

My dining room is currently a "work in progress". I've been working away at it during my free time and I'm happy to say that it is ALMOST complete!

The other day I was able to recover all six of my dining chairs.

Before they were covered in black faux leather. It might not have looked great, but was super practical. At our old house this was in our kitchen and with three kids having fabric on the chairs wasn't really an option.

Now that we've moved to our new home and this set is in our seldom used dining room I figured it was safe to recover them in fabric.

I love how doing something so simple and inexpensive changes the entire feeling of the room.

Dresser redo

This past May I picked up this ugly duckling dresser at a garage sale for $10.00.

She was in desperate need of a makeover, but I feel in love with the shape and knew it would be the perfect size for our dining room.

However, she sat in our garage for most of May, all of June, and all the July. I walked by her {yes, in my mind it's a she} everyday and began to second guess myself. "What was I thinking, look at all those scratches, this might be too much work for me". 

Finally, last week I decided it was now or never and got to work.

Here she is today...

Brace yourself for the before...

I started by removing all the hardware and the "fancy things" on the top drawer and very bottom. 

I gave it a good sanding and cleaning.

I used a spray primer made for plastic outdoor furniture since this piece has a veneer like finish.

Since I wanted stripes on the top I spray painted the entire top blue. Then I measured and marked my stripes with painters tape. 

Then I gave the piece several coats of white paint {about three}.

Since she does have some dings and scratches on her I decided to go with it and sanded off some of the white paint afterwards for a distressed look.

Lastly, I spray painted the original hardware. Not sure if I'll keep the hardware or not it's a little ornate. I might look for something else down the road.

I'm so happy that I finally fixed her up. Now she looks fabulous in my "work in progress" dining room!

Chevron chair makeover

Hi everyone! I had a very nice and productive weekend these  last two days. I had some down time to relax and read. Some free time to spend online catching up on some favorite blogs and Pinterest. I was also able to get a few projects done!

I've been slowly working on my dining room. Last week I painted the walls and trim. 

Saturday I worked on two chairs that I'm going to use in my dining room for extra seating.

This is how my chairs turned out!

This is what they looked like before. 
They weren't bad...I actually repainted and recovered them a few years ago. In our previous home they lived in our living room.

It's hard to tell in the pictures, but the before chair was actually a creamy off white color. 

I removed the seat and then painted the chair white.  I used my electric staple gun to attach the new and much bolder chevron fabric.

I am in love with chevron and this was the perfect way to have some in the room without it being too "in your face"!

So happy with the direction my room is going!

Dining room update

Remember last week when I shared all those beautiful dining rooms with you?

Well, I was finally inspired to start working on my own dining area.

The first thing I did was remove everything except the table and chairs from the room. Then I patched and sanded my swiss cheese walls. I was really on the fence about a new color but finally decided to keep it the same {I really love the color and just painted it a year ago}.

Only one tiny problem.

No more paint to touch up the walls with.

So I took the paint can lid to store and purchased more paint.

Here comes the problem...that paint didn't quite match the existing paint. It was just a tad off.

So I had to paint the entire room with the new {same} color. {confused yet?}

My family thought I had gone MAD. But really the paint didn't match. I know you all would have done the exact same thing! Right?

So my dining room is now freshly painted in the same color!

Once I got the walls painted I turned my attention to the brown trim around the room.

If you've been with me for awhile you will remember that I've been battling the brown trim in our home. I've managed to get most of our downstairs trim painted white over the past six months.

I began by giving the trim a light sanding and dusting.

I used painters tape to tape off the walls. To protect the carpet {yes, I know... yuck, carpet in the dining room} I used pieces of cardboard. I simply shoved pushed the cardboard underneath the baseboards.

I used a paint and primer in one. Still took about four coats to do the trick.

And presto! Nice beautiful white trim!

The room already looks so much brighter!

I'm not going to lie, painting baseboards and trim sucks is NOT fun. It does take some time and patience, but it is soooo worth the effort.

Now if only I could  get some volunteers to do the rest of my house!
